OilY Skin
What is it & how to deal with it
WHAT IS IT?
Oily skin is a condition that develops due to overactive sebaceous (oil) glands producing an abundance of sebum (oil). This activity is mainly controlled by androgens of the masculine hormone. Hot and humid climates tend to exacerbate oil gland secretion, making the skin oilier. Additionally, oily skin problems can be aggravated by the misuse of skincare products. There is a tendency to dry the skin either through the use of astringents or scrubs disrupting the barrier function of the skin and allowing water to evaporate. Overstimulation of skin functions through scrubbing or stimulating massages should be avoided.
HOW TO DIAGNOSE IT?
Oily skin can be recognized by its shiny, thick and firm appearance. Sometimes pores look enlarged, usually due to oil, stratum corneum cells and bacteria trapped in the philosebaceous follicle. An oily complexion may also display blemishes on the cheek, chin and forehead area and feels oily to the touch.
NOTES ON OILY SKIN
There are two categories to classify oily skin: Oily (without water deficiency) and oily dehydrated (with water deficiency). In the first case, the skin has proper hydration; while it feels and looks oily, it does not have the sensation of "dryness". In the second category, the skin lacks moisture. While it can be confusing at times, the skin usually has all the characteristics of oily skin present but feels flaky, rough and scaly. The usual thought when there's a self-diagnose in this last case is to buy several skincare oils since it is not unusual for individuals with oily skin to conclude they don't need a moisturizer because they have oily skin. Thus, it is important to remember that oiliness comes from the oil glands and moisture from the intercellular channels.
